Atkins Diet: Does low carb work as well for all groups?
This video comes out of the multiple comments I have received does it work as well for X as it does for Y. Often, Low carb as been seen as a “Man’s” diet. While it certainly does work for men quite well, it works for women as well too. The second half of this video deals with does it work better for the morbid obese people like my former self or just slightly overweight people. Male vs. Female: Role of a critical visceral adipose tissue threshold (CVATT) in metabolic syndrome: implications for controlling dietary carbohydrates: a review Eric S Freedland Boston University School of Medicine Nutrition & Metabolism 2004, 1:12 “Jeff Volek and colleagues, from the University of Connecticut, also show for the first time that a low carbohydrate diet is much more effective in losing fat from the stomach and chest. They found that fat loss in men was three-times greater in the trunk area, when they were on a low-carbohydrate regime compared to the low-fat diet. Nearly all participants in the study (12 of 15 men and 12 of 13 women) lost more fat on their upper body on the low- carbohydrate diet.” Comparison of the Atkins, Zone, Ornish, and LEARN Diets for Change in Weight and Related Risk Factors Among Overweight Premenopausal Women jama.ama-assn.org “Results Weight loss was greater for women in the Atkins diet group compared with the other diet groups at 12 months, and mean 12-month weight loss was significantly different between the Atkins and Zone diets. Mean 12-month weight …

From Chapter 11 – “Eat liberally of combinations of fat and protein in the form of poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs and red meat, as well as of pure, natural fat in the form of butter, mayonnaise, olive oil, safflower, sunflower and other vegetable oils (preferably expeller-pressed or cold-pressed).”
You can have as much butter as it takes to satiate you. Spinach is a one cup per day vegetable on Induction.
How much BUTTER can I have in a day? Also, is spinach bad on induction and if I eat bake chicken w/skin should add more fat to it like (butter)?
Thank you!
I think what you said about the people who have 20-40 pounds to lose and their inability to truly stick it out because they havent hit rock bottom yet is absolutely true. I have struggled with this myself. Thank you for your insightful videos and all the information you have posted about Atkins.
I love these people who prove the myth wrong. Just one more person to send people to when they say “I can lose weight because I am not XXX…” Way to prove it can be done!
I just wanted to comment and say that it definitely DOES work just as well for a Woman!! I have lost 47lbs since Nov 2009. Don’t believe me? Check out my vids! LC will work for anyone who is willing to put the dedication into changing their lifestyle! I love your vids!!!
Thanks guys for the reaction. I will surely watch your video Bowulf
@xaasda It happened to me as well!! The body will adjust to an average of abt 4 pounds a week in induction, so maybe you loose 13 in a go, then nothing, then one, then another 5… the average matters!! I’m doing 6th induction week and iv already lost 16 pounds…
Check out my Post Induction Stall Syndrome video.
The best thing you can do is just keep following the rules, and the weight will start coming off as the body has adjusted to the new weight and figures out it doesn’t need the additional water.
My suggestion would be to focus on the amount of carbohydrates you are eating not perhaps as much on the Calories. The Calories will take care of themselves as you develop meal plans that feature a low carb vegetable source as well as the fat/protein source.
As a rough guide you can use BMR to set your bottom limit to prevent the starvation mode from setting in.
In the frist 2 weeks I lost about 13 pounds on low carb diet. Now im in my 4th week and im still stuck at 13 pounds weight lost. What to do
I also go to the gym about 3 times a week
@latinjuliet calculate your BMR…. then you will consume the protein and veggies in order to maintain to reset your hypothalamus… and to stay within 2 lbs of your LDW.
I’ll be coming off a strixt low calories diet (HCG DIet) and going right into Atkins in order to maintain our weight loss…thats our protocol. My question to you, how many calories a day do I have to consume in order to lose weight and not just maintain.
@feabeara Thank you! You really should try. It can be nerve racking but you are ahead of the curve in having read the whole book. At least that way you are clued up on what Atkins REALLY is and can start properly. I’d recommend getting to grips with Induction, what you can eat, etc. Do those two weeks, and then see how you feel. Hopefully you will have results and feel great and that will inspire you to carry on. Good luck if you decide to do it. Do let me know how you get on.
Lost 82 pounds but TONS of inches on Atkins. LOVE It!
Sometimes… But most of all right now my goal is to be as healthy, injury-free, and strong as possible. That’s why I spend 5-6 working out with running, basketball, and lifting weights 3 days a week. I judge myself more on the number miles I can run per week, my marathon time, resting heart rate, or my performance at the scene of a fire.
Good job in getting back on the horse. It may not always be as fast as the first time, but you can definitely nail goal this time. Just remember to figure out why you stopped the first time, and avoid the same pitfalls this time.
Congrats on your success and on starting again.
If you check out the studies listed in the video description, the meta-analysis study tried to detail what the Caloric of each study was. Most of the studies were listed as eucaloric, i.e. the same Calories for each group. There were however studies in which the Atkins Diet group was told to eat ad libitum (as much as one wanted).
If you want to find out more of the role Calories in some studies, check out my Calories In Calories Out video.
Btw, just started the diet about two days ago, and I can feel the ketosis kicking in. Feeling great. I’m male, 5′10″, and 205 pounds. Plan to get to 150-160. Fifty pounds to go.
I remebered doing the diet in 2007 it felt great to eat a lot and not have to worry about anything like counting calories. I had every monday morning where I would way myself and see the pounds drop. 3.5 pounds on average a week. I was 250 pounds back then and got to 205 in 3 months. I’m gonna keep going this time.
Bowulf, have you ever considered bodybuilding?
great video.. I have a question though.. low carb vs. low fat you say, what is the caloric value both sides consumed, were they both the same amount of calories just different composition. I do eat low carb but I also count my calories, pay little to no attention to the fat. It works, but these studies always made me wonder if there was a variable of amount of calories consumed???
I think you rock, Cherilyn…
The positive benefits simply far outweigh any negative ones or imposition of two weeks of Induction or adjusting one’s relationship with food. The food certainly tastes just as good or better on Atkins as it ever did in my former life. Thanks for your comments.
No problem – thanks for watching…
@00ellie00 I am female also and need to lose about 50 lbs. I am nervous about starting Atkins. I’ve read the book but I am still unsure. You comment makes me want to start ASAP:)
Advantages vs. disadvantages to this diet are enormous LOL and the list goes on and on and on. Thanks for the encouragement and for posting this.
You Rock Ken!
