Dr. Weil Endorses Gary Taubes’ Good Calories, Bad Calories

CALORIES Gary Taubes was on the program discussing his new book challenging the conventional wisdom regarding fat consumption, a healthy diet, and the unique negative role carbohydrates have played in the obesity epidemic and other health calamities. Featuring guest host from “The View” Joy Behar, the lineup also included Oprah Winfrey’s diet guru Dr. Mehmet Oz as well as respected health expert Dr. Andrew Weil. The discussion was rather contentious as you can see for yourself in the …

Gary Taubes is right, low carb, natural fats diet is the only way to maintain a healthy weight. I’ve lost over 15 pounds in the last year just by cutting back on refined (= packaged) carbs and sugar.

Low carb high fat is the easiest way to loose weight without having to be hungry at all. Hormone-controlled weight loss is effective, painfree and gives you alot more then just weight loss. You get your health back.

LCHF is really big in Sweden.

Thanks for the information again. I’ll look into distilled water as an alternative.

I just saw a documentary on CBC Doc Zone (free online) titled “The Disappering Male” . It stated that the plastics in our society today disrupts “estrogen” which causes the body to store fat. It also interfers with fertility. A true eye opener and perhaps another link in answering the obesity debate.

I’m in Canada as well so hopefully you R familiar with some of the stores I will mention. I buy gallon jugs at Food Basics -it is .99 cents each. It’s sold almost any grocery store & drug store, “Shoppers Drug Mart” but why pay more. You’re correct, it has nothing in it… no minerals, but from time to time I buy Evian, or an Italian mineral water. Also, minerals are in veggies and fruits, I haven’t worried about it, but that is a personal choice to supplement or not. Google mineral contents

    Thanks for the response.

Where does one pickup distilled water….local health food stores?? Also, I heard somewhere that distilled water is mineral free, which is supposedly a bad thing? Is this true, and if so, can it be off-set by a mineral supplement?

Bottled water varies quite a bit. For example, Dasani, is bottled tap water from Brampton, Ontario, filtered 5 times. I could do the same thing with my Brita filter. Some bottled water from France or Italy has small amounts of naturally occuring fluoride and then some companies actually add fluoride to the bottled water. I chose to drink distilled as my first choice, as it has nothing in it. It tastes “crisp & clean”. Once in a while I get flat Italian mineral water, just for the minerals.

    Does bottled water contain flouride?

It is very simple, eat whole foods and cut out starches, sugars and flour.

  16. DianeDi says:

#1 hormonal disturbance = water fluoridation… directly related to Hypothyrodism… which effects every aspect of your metabolism.. in addition is Aspartame and MSG… which is in thousands of our food and beverage products. We are what we eat… keep it simple, clean and pure….. it’s the chemical additives causing most of our health problems.

funny that anyone is responding with any contrarian view having not read his book. Read the book, people

I think for the most part you’re right: going back to natural foods is a huge part of health. The reason some people get so fanatical about low carb is that, for whatever reason, we have a much greater sensitivity to the carbs in our diet than others. For those without the hormonal difficulties what you write works fine. For those like me, with PCOS or another hormonal condition, even relatively healthy, unprocessed carbs can prevent weight loss or even cause weight gain. We like having options.

  19. xxmonickkkkaxx says:

Well actually its the right carbs not necessarily low carb. Just cut out sugar, white bread, HFCS, processed foods and eat only organic and you will be thin.

  20. jckchrstphr says:

I agree. If you’re overweight, becoming overweight, or have a history of those problems, it’s likely you’re insulin is chronically elevated — a metabolic/endocrine disorder. The biggest marker of that being abdominal/visceral fat.

If you don’t have those conditions it seems like you do fine on starchy root vegetables (like potatoes) and even rice and oats. But I suspect this works only if you’re fit and active. And of course you’d still have to avoid Omega6 oils and processed fructose.

  21. livinlowcarbman says:

Actually, Taubes would agree with you somewhat, but most the impact of carbohydrate in the body varies according to the individual tolerance level. Just a tiny bit of carbs in my body sends my insulin skyrocketing…for others, it takes much more. That’s what he was saying.

  22. jckchrstphr says:

Hormone imbalance is real not pseudoscience. Insulin is a hormone. And when it’s chronically elevated — it’s imbalanced.

Endocrine/hormonal disorders are involved in weight gain, that’s not in dispute. Look up “leptin” for another player.

Also the thyroid is a hormonal gland, it’s involved in metabolism. And with the right foods, you can wreak havoc on it.

But I disagree with Taubes (I think), in that I distinguish the type of carb — wheat is the main villain, gluten in particular.

  23. XBGJDKE says:

    Well said :)

  24. XBGJDKE says:

It comes down to statistics: things like a sedentary lifestyle and eating too much are correlated with weight gain. That means that these behavioral factors could be causing the weight gain, or that the genetic/hormonal factors that contribute to weight gain also cause inactivity and overeating. I have to admit that after seeing people eat insane amounts of food and not gain weight, while other people eat 500 calories a day and gain weight (if it’s carbs) gives me pause.

  25. XBGJDKE says:

    Go Taubes Go! Low-carb ftw!
