That chart is a joke if you ask me. 195 is not overweight at all for a 6′1 frame lol. It doesnt take into account muscle mass and bone density like it should.

Hell im a muscular 5′9.5 180-185 ibs, not much fat at all.

  2. brockschoenbeck says:

see now that weight with that height is actually concidered overweight accourding to the BMI chart. anything 189 and over

  3. canuckman87 says:

    190-195 at 6′1 and 3000 calories a day i would say.

  4. brockschoenbeck says:

what would you say a good weight for 6′1 if i want to be lean (cut) and gain mass in my upper body (muscle, not fat). what do you think my daily calorie count should be, saying that i strength train 3 times a week and cardio 2 times. I am trying to cause hypertrophy without gaining fat

  5. brockschoenbeck says:

okay say i am 73in and weigh about 160…that puts me at about a 21.1 or 21.3 BMI … what i dont get is i still look “skinny” i mean i have muscle but im not buff, and i wounder how much the guys my height weigh when they have more muscle than me. Without being classified as overweight because that starts at 189lbs for 6′ 1. even the guys that are shorter than me i mean that would put them in the overweight classification

If here weight is generally staying the same, then cut calories OR increase activity. If here weight is going up, then increase activity AND cut calories. With exercise and her acitivity level though her job, you can bet that her eating pattern will be somewhat higher then 1200 calories daily. On weekends we tend to eat more naturally. Add, subtract or adjust her acitivity and calories UNTIL she trends at 1 lb. per week and hit’s 115 lbs. about 15 weeks from today.

  7. brushfour says:

brock, the scale and tape measure must be part of the weightloss process. The 1200 calorie idea is a reasonable suggestion for the average person. Your girl is probably burning more calories then most because of her job. Ulitmately it’s the scale the tape measure that will tell the story as to what you girl must do. Try an eating pattern of about 1200 calories or so. Journal what she’s eating from day to day. If her weight TRENDS downward at more then 1 lb. per week or so, then increase cals.

  8. brockschoenbeck says:

Okay my girl is about 130 lbs and she want to be about 115-120 so she should take in only 1200 calories a day? that just doesnt seem like enough. Is that rule just for sedintary life, or I mean just to function in the basics? she is a nurse so she is pretty much standing or walking for 8 hrs should she eat a few more calories for that? She thinks she can skip meals and lose weight is this just hurting her, does that increase her chance for fat stores?

  9. BodyPerformanceTV says:

    Yes, that’s exactly right.

  10. aidanqn says:

Steve, I read that a 500 kcal daily deficit translates to about a 1 lb weight loss per week. Does that seem reasonable?

If so, then you can use it, together with your advice, to calculate one’s likely rate of progress.

  11. monkeytwineball says:

Don’t eat less. Your body adapts to how much you eat, it will still maintain 1930 calories a day, but it will do it by eating your muscles and your fat. Once it’s eaten a pound of muscle, it will need 10 less calories a day, a pound of fat however, only burns about 2 calories a day.
That means you’ll be burning more muscle than fat to adapt to your low calorie diet.

  12. TheRealDirtyScary says:

If I want to gain some weight in muscle, how much should I eat then?

  13. dxvanedf3 says:

    Steve,

    become a beachbody coach!!

  14. Kelvin702 says:

so are those calorie calculators wrong? I’m 135 male, assuming i dont exercise, but actually do. it says i need 1930 calories to maintain my weight. If thats wrong to weigh 125lbs, i have to 1250 calories per day. and do an hour of my regular cardio to lose weight. Wow, i never though id have to eat that much less lol.

  15. franciscccccc says:

I’m male, 17, weigh 126 pounds and I’m 170cm tall, I’ve been lifting about 3 months and seem to be in great shape and I’m looking to gain some size, when I relax my stomach however it still sticks out a fair bit although you can still see my ribs…Am I seriously only supposed to be eating 1260 calories a day?

  16. BodyPerformanceTV says:

Nice job! Keep up the good work. It’s consistency and determination that will get you there!

  17. MrUltimateTKO says:

Cool, I used to weigh 310 then 300, 1 week before I started exercising, I was about 286. It’s been 2 months now, I am at 255 pounds. My goal is to reach 180 pounds n___n

  18. BodyPerformanceTV says:

This is a general rule but a good guideline!

  19. aipyor says:

so if you’re 200 lbs and want to be 100 should you be eating 1000 calories a day? this is the most useful piece of info anyone has told me..seriously..thanks:)

  20. DiceEsque says:

I think 12-15 calories per pound is more like it.

  21. Crckrjck666 says:

I lose weight eating way more than 10 calories per pound…

  22. brushfour says:

I’ve heard the calorie number from many good trainers over the years. Some say 10, some say 12, some say 10 or 11 for people who are in average shape or non athletic. A columnist for Muscles and Fitness magazine years ago said for athletic trained people, it’s around 14. I don’t know if it’s THAT high. But 10 is a good number. You consume more calories a day then you think you do anyway, so why not just go with 10. Lower the number slowly AS you lose weight, not all in one shot.

  23. brushfour says:

The calorie equation is a general rule number but pretty correct actually. If you’re maintaining a weight of 365 lbs at 2000 calories per day…everyday, somethings wrong here. I’ve never heard anyone weighing that much with a 2000 calorie a day eating pattern,…and maintaining,…let alone GAIN. You might want to have your thyroid checked. I’ve known lots of athletes and non athletes on diets, and your story is the first and only I’ve ever heard like that.

  24. EVILTRIPS666 says:

How much exercise does this formula assume?

  25. bundleHastings says:

Calorie theory is nonsense. I am 365 and I have never eaten as much as 3650 kc a day. I rarely exceed 2,000. I also do 1hr aerobic excercise 4 times a week. Yet I have gained consistently.
